Your carpets are one of your biggest assets. You want them to look good, feel good and smell good. When your carpets look dirty, dingy and have an unpleasant odor, it is not only unwelcoming to you and your guests, but it can actually decrease the value of your home.
Maintaining Your Carpets
Maintaining your carpets is important. In order to give your carpets every advantage of having a long life so that you don’t incur the added expense of having to replace them before you should, you will want to take good care of them which means good carpet maintenance.
- Regular vacuuming:
One of the best things you can do for your carpet is to vacuum it regularly. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends vacuuming at least twice a week. Many people think that an occasional, or even just spot-vacuuming is enough. In order to thoroughly clean your carpet, you should vacuum your carpet, thoroughly, at least once a week. This includes moving furniture where dirt, dust and debris can hide.
- Vacuum thoroughly:
Lots of things can get under furniture that you don’t see, including fleas, bed bugs, bacteria, among other things. If you don’t move pieces of furniture, you miss the opportunity to get many things that can be damaging to your carpet and carpet fibers. They are things that can age your carpet, discolor, and contaminate.
- Spot Vacuum:
In between your weekly thorough and regular vacuums, you should also spot vacuum as needed. When you see a spill or dirt being tracked in from out of doors, be quick to vacuum it up before it has the chance to settle into the carpet or be traipsed on and pushed deep into the fibers where it will be hard to excavate.
- Steam Cleaning:
Steam cleaning is also important to maintaining your carpets and should also be done regularly. In order to keep your carpet fibers soft, flexible and intact, plan to have your carpets professionally cleaned a couple times a year. Remove spots immediately in between steam cleans, to prevent stains from permanently settling in. Click here to learn about how to get blood out of carpet.
